Before You Travel: Don’t Forget to Activate Your Card

If you’re packing for an adventure abroad, one of the most important steps — and one often overlooked — is activating your card for international use. Many banks, for security reasons, keep cards blocked for foreign transactions, so if you don’t notify them beforehand, you might get an unpleasant surprise when trying to pay for a coffee or withdraw cash at your destination.

It’s best to contact your bank at least 48 hours before you travel. Some banks let you activate your card directly through their mobile app or website, while others require a call to their customer service. Take this chance to also ask if your card charges fees for international use and whether it’s better to pay in local currency or in dollars at the time of purchase.

Another key tip: carry more than one card (in case one fails), keep your banking app active, and make sure notifications are turned on to monitor every transaction.

Worry-free travel starts with good planning. Activating your card is a small step that can save you big headaches.
